DESIGN.md flavors

Themes over Aura. Generate one from any design with the generate-design-md skill, then give its link to the agent in your project.

DESIGN.md flavors

A flavor is a DESIGN.md that adapts Aura to a new look. It changes color seeds, type, radius, shape, motion and voice. The 13px grid, the components, Radix icons, forms and accessibility stay Aura. The root DESIGN.md remains the base spec, and the flavor is saved next to it as DESIGN.theme.md.

Each flavor ships two files:

FileHolds
DESIGN.mdThe DESIGN.md alpha format: token frontmatter, extends pointing at the Aura base, an aura block (theme seeds, fonts, radius, extra tokens), and the narrative an agent follows
theme.cssGenerated from the aura block: 12-step accent and gray scales for light and dark, fonts, radius and extra tokens, ready to paste into globals.css

Apply a flavor

Open the DESIGN.md gallery, pick a flavor and press Copy link. In your Aura project, tell the agent:

Apply this design: <link>

The always-on design-md rule tells the agent what to do with the link: save it as DESIGN.theme.md, append the sibling theme.css after the existing theme blocks in globals.css, and restyle with Aura components. Install the rule with:

pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @aura/rule-design-md

Generate a flavor

The generate-design-md skill turns a pasted DESIGN.md (flavors.design, Google Stitch), a site URL, a screenshot or a brand brief into a flavor. It keeps the source's personality and expresses every signature element through Aura tokens and components.

pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @aura/skill-generate-design-md

It also ships in the @aura/skills bundle. Then ask:

Make a DESIGN.md flavor from this: <paste or URL>

The skill:

  1. Reads the palette, type, grid, shape, signature elements, voice and don'ts from the source.
  2. Writes the frontmatter, including the aura block the generator reads.
  3. Converts every spacing value to the 13px grid, maps every color role to an Aura step or a custom token, and maps every element to an Aura component.
  4. Reinterprets dark mode through a few semantic variables instead of inverting colors.
  5. Writes the narrative: Apply steps, Overview, Colors with Dark mode, Typography, Layout, Elevation & Depth, Shapes, Components, Do's and Don'ts, Motion, Reference.

The aura block

aura:
  theme:
    light: { accent: "#3139fb", gray: "#696969", background: "#ffffff" }
    dark: { accent: "#5b62ff", gray: "#6f6f8f", background: "#0e0f1f" }
  fonts:
    sans: "Inter"
    display: "Gabarito"
    label: "Space Mono"
    href: "https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Gabarito:wght@700&family=Inter:wght@400;600&family=Space+Mono:wght@700&display=swap"
  hero: "band"
  headingWeight: 700
  radius: { button: "10px", input: "10px", surface: "13px" }
  tokens:
    light: { brand-deep: "#2702c2" }
    dark: { brand-deep: "#2a1bb0" }

The gray seed is a mid-tone that carries the source's tint, never its darkest ink. If the source's primary action is ink, the accent seed is ink. Extra colors go in tokens with the same names in light and dark.

Rules a flavor keeps

  • Every value in the narrative is a token, a class on the 13px grid, or a custom token from the frontmatter. No new hex in components.
  • Dark mode always exists. When the source has none, the skill writes one.
  • The flavor says what it overrides on purpose, such as 0px radius, so the agent does not undo it.
  • It never copies the source's full HTML, brand names or product claims into your product.
